TC Library's Subscription Databases and the World Wide Web offer a large number of valuable sites to those biographies in any field. BIOGRAPHY RESOURCE CENTER + THE COMPLETE MARQUIS WHO'S WHO, via Infotrac II,  includes full-text articles from hundreds of periodicals. Search for world leaders, artists, sports heroes, business people, etc. based on one or more personal facts such as birth and death year, nationality, ethnicity, or gender, or combine criteria to create a highly-targeted custom search. With the Complete Marquis Who's Who, find quick reference information on an additional 900,000 people.   HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a first stop. 

CUSTOM NEWSPAPERS, from Gale on Infotrac II, provides full-text articles from 40+ U.S. and a few British dailies, including their business sections. The New York Times, Washington Post, and Nashville Tennessean are among the titles indexed. Particularly valuable for students seeking contemporary biographies.

ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA, the world's first commercial on-line encyclopedia is available to members of the Tusculum College Community.  Source of general biographical information from throughout history.                                                                                         back to top

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF LIFE SCIENCES comes via the ACA Central Library; in addition to an A-Z encyclopedia, the site also includes a glossary and a database of 3,000 peer-reviewed and weekly-updated articles. Helpful for those interested in the history of life science, conservation, and involved scientists.

FINDARTICLES.COM is a  free index to full-text magazines which appear on the web (including a few not covered by the subscription databases noted here, e.g., History Today), is, surprisingly, overlooked on the links pages of most libraries . Not to be taken lightly, it is recommended.                                                                                                                                                

General Business File InternationAL, from the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) on Infotrac I, provides researchers with information on companies, markets and industries. Valuable for students seeking  biographical information on economic, communications, and technological personnel.

GROVE DICTIONARY OF ART ONLINE  provides online access to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art with constant additions of new material and updates, plus extensive image links and search capabilities. Look here for painters and other artists.

GROVE MUSIC ONLINE is an integrated online music resource that includes the full text of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and the New Grove Dictionary of Opera. Profiles of all sorts of musicians are included.

INFOTRAC ONEFILE, from TEL on Infotrac I, is a  one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of biographies from politicians to sports heroes, scientists, feminists and entertainers. Millions of full-text articles, many with images. Updated daily. LITERATURE RESOURCE CENTER, from Gale on Infotrac II, provides access to  biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of more than 120,000 authors from every age and literary discipline. Check here for writers from Cicero to Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.

  In order to avoid a lengthy list of links, we have broken this site up into a subjective series of alphabetically-arranged major categories. Beyond our effort, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you visit The World Wide Web Virtual Library  History: Central Links Catalogue; this site, originally developed at the University of Kansas,  is the most important for historians and social scientists on the entire Web. The WWWVL also contains biographies in other areas scattered around its topical or alphabetical listings. Another source of value is Social Science Information Gateway; resources here include articles, reports, bibliographic databases, organizations, etc.
