Vol. XVI, no. 1 THE LIBRARY AT TUSCULUM COLLEGE September 2005
Welcome!
This the 16th year of publication for this newsletter. On behalf of the entire library staff (Jack, Anne, Charles, Mary, Carolyn, Marsha, Kathy, Elaine, Jennifer, and Jonathan), readers old and new and regardless of location are invited to join us in person or online as Tusculum College continues another exciting school year.
How We Spent Our Summer; or, A Huge Thanks:
As most of you know by now, the Greeneville library was removed from Pioneer Gym, d.b.a. Pioneer Library, between June 18 and August 8. Three rounds with the professional movers were required before all of the items stored in the gym or the library annex trailer were finally in house here in the Library at Tusculum College. The time was extremely busy for the whole library staff as we also brought in, received training upon, and introduced our new automated system from The Library Corporation (TLC). Some libraries receive new buildings and some obtain new automated systems; very few have ever tried to launch both simultaneously. We are very proud that we were able, with considerable aid and support from the entire campus community, to successfully achieve this double goal. Thanks to everyone who made this possible.
Library Grand Opening:
The remodeled Greeneville library’s Grand Opening will be held in the lobby at 10: 30 a.m. on Friday, September 23. A ribbon will be cut and appropriate remarks made. The brief ceremony will be one of those memorable events in the history of the institution. Everyone is invited.
New Staff:
Two new staff members have joined us. Jennifer Wilcox, TC Class ’03, is here, mainly in afternoons and evenings, on the Greeneville campus while Jonathan Ballinger, a veteran of the Knox County Public Library System, has joined Mary and Elaine at the Knoxville Center. We hope you can find the time to stop by and say “hello” to these folks.
New Hours:
The Greeneville campus library is now open until 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday. On Saturday, we operate from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. These regular hours, any changes to these library hours, and other activities, are posted on the library website http://library.tusculum.edu under Library News.
New Library Automation System:
As noted above, the libraries at both Greeneville and Knoxville are now employing the TLC system for circulation and cataloging. Circulation of books, videos, and reserves now requires the use of a bar-coded ID card. Although most folks have obtained their cards, a few have not and may make inquiry of us as to the process of obtaining one, which is slightly different for Residential or Professional Studies students.
New Book/Videos:
The cataloging and acquisition department has been extremely active this summer. Most faculty requests from both campuses have been ordered and the majority have been received and have been or are being cataloged. Faculty are invited to track recommendations via the online catalog, which is updated daily. FYI, any titles listed as “in processing” are in the Technical Services office (Greeneville) or with Mary (Knoxville), but are not quite ready to go on the shelf. Faculty needing such items before the catalog shows them as “available” may request them of Mary, Carolyn Parker, or Kathy Hipps.
New Books/Videos List:
A new materials list has been posted showing 406 items cataloged into the Greeneville collection since July. It employs a slightly-revised format created by our TLC system.
Orientation/Instructional Sessions:
Faculty, both Traditional and Professional Studies, are encouraged to request general class library orientations or subject-specific library use instructional sessions from the library faculty. Contact points are Anne Reever, Professional Studies Northeast (ex.5801); Mary Halliburton, Professional Studies Southeast (ex. 5016); and Charles Tunstall (ex.5124), Traditional program. Jack Smith is also available for Traditional sessions if needed and Kathy Hipps is assisting Mr. Tunstall. These sessions, on the Greeneville campus, are available in the library’s new Information Literacy Room.
Information Literacy:
The library staff remains very interested in pursuit, in whatever way is feasible, of this important concept, reviewed last year with the Programs & Policies Committee, the GPS Council, and the College Council. We, like many of you, are keen that this initiative not falter and are anxious to continue the dialog in whatever forum might prove most viable.
New Faculty/Staff Lounge:
A new faculty/staff lounge (Room 319), dedicated to that purpose during the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, has been set aside from the suite of study rooms on the second floor of the Greeneville library. Coffee, courtesy of Dr. Henry, is available. We hope as many folks who have time to swing by for a cup or a visit will do so. The library director personally brews the first pot every morning; any concerns—or compliments-- as to its temperature, strength, or weakness should be addressed to him.
