XV, no. 5 TUSCULUM COLLEGE LIBRARY April-May 2005
NEW Electronic Books:
Wiley Inter Science Electronic Books:
Through membership in the ACA Central Library, Tusculum College has recently acquired 37 electronic book titles published by John Wiley & Sons covering topics in mathematics, psychology, statistics and the sciences. Access to these titles is now available on campus through the E-Books link on the Library Website. A link for Off Campus access is coming soon. A link will also be placed on the Research Databases page.
The mutually agreed upon ACA purchase represents only a percentage of the entire Wiley e-book collection. Each of these 37 titles is listed at our E-Books link and must be accessed individually. When the link for each title is accessed, a page with the bibliographic information for the book appears followed by each chapter of the book. All titles listed are owned and available in full text so it is not necessary to pay attention to the 4 bulleted options below the title information. It is also possible for multiple users to view the same title simultaneously. If further assistance is needed or to provide comments on this new collection of e-books please contact the library.
NetLibrary/Ebrary:
In addition to the Wiley posting, both netLibrary and ebrary have added significant additional titles to their electronic book collections. A total of 1,179 new netLibrary books are now accessible to the Tusculum College community, along with 1,000 from the 23,000 volume ebrary Academic Complete collection. Representative of the new titles now appearing in the latter group are The Cambridge History of Early Modern English; The Proteus Effect: Stem Cells and Their Promise; Documentary History of the First Federal Congress of the United States of America (17 vols.); Model Financial Markets; Making School Reform Work; and Handbook on Radiation Probing, Gauging, Imaging and Analysis.
For those of you keeping score, TC now has access to 70,216 electronic books via these two collections.
NEW print book lists:
Although the library, both in Greeneville and Knoxville, continues to catalog and process new works into its print collections, we have not been able to get a new book list up in April due to staff illness. We will attempt to have one up before the end of May and recommend that you watch the library homepage for the link. In the event that the summer schedule (see below) scuttles that goal, be assured that the process will be resumed as soon as possible.
Summer schedule:
This is the summer of our long-anticipated move from Pioneer Library to the new facility in Greeneville, as well as the time when we introduce our new automated library system. These twin events will occasion some readjustments to our Greeneville operating schedule and will, at times, have significant impact upon our ability to deliver physical services. Our electronic databases will remain operational 24/7 and the Knoxville branch will function per usual.
Our physical move to the new facility is scheduled for the week of June 13. Installation and staff training on the new automation system is scheduled for the four days July 5-8. Please be aware that the Greeneville library will not be open either week. Additionally, depending upon the time needed for run-up to the move or adjustment thereafter, a few additional down days may occur. Please watch the library homepage for exact times of the move and other associated events, which will be posted as soon as confirmed.
These activities are once in century events and we know that you all join us in celebration of the transfer. If any faculty require books or videos for any residential college summer school session and want to check them out ahead of time from the current location, please feel free to do so before June 6.
A Message to Residential Faculty from Mr. Tunstall:
”I would like to individually acquaint faculty with all services available from
our new library, to introduce you to our ever-broadening ranges of services and
resources. As you know, over the past couple of years, we have together made
great strides in improving and updating both our reference and circulating print
collections, as well as our electronic databases. I would also like to discuss
with you what new or improved services we could offer to you and your
students. I will be calling each of you in the new school year to solicit a
time when I may come to your office (or if you prefer, you can come to mine) so
that we might have a personalized one-on-one conversation (and maybe even some
hands-on Q&A demonstrations). My goal for next year is to become as closely
linked with each of you as is professionally possible in order that together we
can work to acquire those library resources and develop and/or offer those
services which would be most helpful to you and your students.
Those of you who are planning to teach Extended Orientation: Please contact me
so I can assist you in planning library-use instruction that can be specifically
tailored to your class. You can reach me at 5124.
Coming soon: THE REFERENCE SHELF, a newsletter for all faculty and students
devoted to reference services and the Information Commons. Watch for it!”
Acting Librarian
Anne Reever is once again hitting the boards in 2 supporting roles with the Morristown Theatre Guild production of Tennessee William’s gritty and poignant drama, A Streetcar Named Desire. A Streetcar Named Desire is one of the greatest masterpieces of American drama. “Tennessee Williams's 1947 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama tells the story of Blanche Dubois, a faded Southern belle. Taking refuge from her crumbling past, the fragile Blanche arrives unexpectedly at her sister Stella's doorstep, hoping for a better life and the restoration of her senses. But her childlike helplessness, romantic yearnings, and genteel illusions are no match for the squalor of her new surroundings, the oppressive summer heat, and her brother-in-law's growing rage.”
Performances will be located in the auditorium of Morristown East High School Friday and Saturday May 6 and 7 and Sunday May 8. Show times are 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults $10 for students and seniors and $8 for children. You may make reservations by calling the Theater Guild box office and leaving a message at 423-586-9260 and they will call you back or tickets will be available at the door before the performance.

Thanks:
Many thanks to all who have offered congrats to me concerning completion of “The Baseball Bibliography,” 2nd ed. Your kindness is much appreciated. FYI, most of the baseball books which I had obtained during the course of this three-year project have been or are being donated to our library’s collection.
