New Book/DVD Recommendations 2012:

 Faculty wishing to recommend new titles for the circulating collections of the Greeneville or Knoxville libraries may do so at any time. In order that they might be entered into the institutional approval process, suggestions may be sent to the library director jsmith@tusculum.edu by e-mail (with complete pricing and bibliographic information) or sent online employing the form located on the library’s home page  http://library.tusculum.edu/facpurchaserecommend.html. Occasionally, faculty will be sent lists of possible titles for acquisition seeking input or support. Amazon (and not its affiliate retailers) is the library’s vendor. New Databases AND E-books: 

PROJECT MUSE!  

Our latest online acquisition, the scholarly journal database, Project Muse, acquired via the ACA as the direct result of faculty request, has been added to Garland Library’s online research database page: http://library.tusculum.edu/researchdata.htm..Similar in respect to JSTOR, we note from its webpage  http://muse.jhu.edu/about/muse/index.html :

“MUSE began in 1993 as a pioneering joint project of the Johns Hopkins University Press and the Milton S. Eisenhower Library (MSEL) at JHU. Grants from the Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities allowed MUSE to go live with JHU Press journals in 1995. Journals from other publishers were first incorporated in 2000, with additional publishers joining in each subsequent year. Today, MUSE is still a not-for-profit collaboration between the participating publishers and MSEL, with the goal of disseminating quality scholarship via a sustainable model that meets the needs of both libraries and publishers.”  

You are invited to visit the Project Muse page and familiarize yourself with the searching features of this significant new addition. The platform is integrated for both e-books and journals; however, at this time, TC subscribes only to its journals.

NETLIBRARY COLLECTION X

The LYRASIS 10^th Shared Collection of NetLibrary eBooks begun in September, has been finished.  The works, as with all NetLibrary e-books, are available on the online research database page  now under EBSCO E-books. , Collection X includes 3,002 titles, bringing the total for the 10 collections to 72, 508 different e-books.  The current title list is available on the LYRASIS website at http://www.lyrasis.org/Products-and-Services/Catalog/N/NetLibrary-eBook-LYRASIS-Shared-Collection-10.aspx.

 SPECIAL PROGRAMMING:

  The Special Programming calendar of the Thomas J. Garland has been  launched in a third season.  A number of events will be hosted at the main campus facility and we hope there will be wide attendance by people from the Tusculum and Greeneville communities.  Several programs are under development, but events on the calendar to date include:

Fall Semester Events:

September:

The Thomas J. Garland Library at Tusculum College hosted the annual display of textbooks under consideration for adoption for the upcoming year by local schools. The display was sponsored by the Tennessee Textbook Commission. The public was  invited to stop by the library during regular operating hours to review the items and make recommendations.  A concluding reception was held from 3:00-5:00p.m. on Thursday, September 29, 2011. Over 20 TC faculty, students, and local teachers attended.

October:

Haints and Boogers: Part 3: Elmer’s Awakening

For the third year, members of the library staff presented the program “Haints and Boogers:  Ghosts and Spirits at Tusculum College and in Upper East Tennessee” in the Library’s Information Commons (reference room) on Thursday evening, October 27 at 6 p.m. Stories concerning paranormal activities on campus and  in the surrounding community were explored by the 170 people in attendance. Refreshments followed.

November:

Children’s Story Hour 1:

Members of  the Garland library staff  presented a 3rd annual  children’s story hour  program in the library on Thursday, November 17 from 6-7 p.m.  The event was, as in the past, open to all Tusculum College family members  ages 8 and under.   A variety of photos from past programs have been posted on the library website <http://library.tusculum.edu/garlandlibrarystoryhour11182010.htm>.

December:

Lessons and Carols:

 For an hour on the morning of December 7, the lobby of Garland Library was the scene for the annual Christmas tradition, the festival of Lessons and Carols.  Readings and carols were offered under the direction of Mark Stokes, Director of Religious Life, Church and Community Relations. 

Spring Programming Events:

The spring special events programming schedule remains a work in progress. So far, we anticipate these presentations.

January:

Classical Guitar Recital.  A recital of classical guitar music will be presented by Reference Library Charles Tunstall and noted guitar artist and instruction in the Thomas J. Garland Library lobby on Thursday January 26 at 6 p.m .  Vocals will be offered by a guest artist and refreshments will follow.

February:

Children's Story Hour 2 will be presented on Tuesday, February 21, at 6 p.m.  Readings and project will again be a highlight, along with refreshments.   Send in your reservations now or watch for a detail repeat in an announcement from  the College Communications office.

March

The venue of the March programming event will be off the main campus, at Eastman Employee Center/Room 219 on Wilcox Dr. in Kingsport, TN. At 7 p.m. on Monday, March 12, Jack Smith will present the program “USS Carondelet, a Famous Civil War Ironclad in Tennessee” before the spring meeting of the Tri-Cities Civil War Roundtable.  All members of the TC community are invited to attend this library extension event.

Route 66. A fresh program by the sweet sounds of Route 66 will again be presented in the Garland Library lobby by Marsha Griffith and Amy Saxonmeyer .  The entire community anticipates this annual musical treat, date and time for which will be announced in our next number.

From our friends at TENN-SHARE, we note the availability of this guide to test creation, taken from “A Media Specialist’s Guide to the Internet” blog. Jack Smith’s review of the 2^nd ed. of  Terry L. Jones’  Historical Dictionary of the Civil War appeared in the December 2011 edition of CHOICE.
