Vol. XX, no. 1 THE THOMAS J. GARLAND LIBRARY Sept.-Oct. 2009
Welcome:
This is the 20th year of publication for this bi-monthly newsletter. On behalf of the entire library staff (Jack, Anne, Charles, Mary, Carolyn, Marsha, Kathy, Elaine, and Jonathan), readers old and new and regardless of location are invited to join us in person or online as Tusculum College continues another exciting school year.
About our Masthead:
Your editor is occasionally asked why we have maintained the “Reel n’ Page” masthead and name for our bimonthly newsletter these past many years and have not moved to some new computer-generated, full-color identity. The reason is tradition. Our logo was drawn specifically for this library publication by the distinguished Appalachian artist John Bond. We will keep it at least a while longer.
Library Hours:
The Greeneville campus is open until 10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday. Friday hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Saturday, we operate from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and on Sunday we open at 6 p.m.
At the Knoxville Regional Center library hours are: Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. ; Friday 12 noon – 7 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.; Sunday CLOSED
Any changes to these library regular hours, and other activities, are posted on the library website http://library.tusculum.edu.
New Library Online Orientation:
The library is pleased to announce a new online orientation resource available to all students and faculty. The Library Online Orientation is a set of interactive modules that assist users in learning basic information on using the library online catalog, the library electronic book collections and its research databases. Additional modules will continue to be developed for use by all TC users. This first set of modules was created by Jonathan Ballinger, Coordinator for Technical Services at Garland Library Knoxville in partial fulfillment of his Masters of Arts in Adult Education with a concentration in Human Resource Development. Thank you Jonathan, for all your hard work in developing these excellent student resources. To access and view the online orientation, choose the Research Guides and Tutorials link on the library homepage and select “Garland Library Online Orientation Modules”.
Record Greeneville attendance:
Since school began, Garland Library daily attendance on the Greeneville campus has skyrocketed. A record of 532 visitors was recorded on August 26. Daily August attendance was 165.70.
Residential IL Growth:
The Information Literacy program in support of the Residential College has now reached, in terms of volume and effectiveness, that in place for GPS since 2003. During Block I (latest figures available at this writing), Mrs. Hipps and Mr. Tunstall, our Residential Information Team, presented 31 class sessions in the Greeneville Federal Bank Information Literacy Room.
New Book/DVD Recommendations 2009-2010:
Faculty wishing to recommend new titles for the circulating collections of the Greeneville or Knoxville libraries may do so at any time. In order that they might be entered into the institutional approval process, suggestions need to be sent online employing the form located on the library’s home page: http://library.tusculum.edu/facpurchaserecommend.html.
Database trial:
Free Trial: SAGE Reference Online
The Handbook Collection hosted on SAGE Reference Online contains 80 authoritative, award–winning, international, and interdisciplinary handbooks across the social sciences. This Collection increases the content on the platform to more than 160 titles while offering enhanced functionality. A 30-day free trial to Sage eReference Encyclopedias and Handbook Collection has been created for faculty review through October 19, 2009. To begin using the free trial from on campus (Greeneville, Morristown, Knoxville) go to http://sage-ereference.com/ Access to the trial is also available through our Off campus link at the top of the Research Database page through the library website. Type in the generic TC username and password to begin reviewing this resource. Please direct any questions to Anne Reever Osborne (ext. 5801).

Faculty/Staff Lounge:
A faculty/staff lounge (Room 319), dedicated to that purpose during the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, remains set aside from the suite of study rooms on the second floor of the Greeneville library. The room may also be booked for committee meetings.
Coffee in Tech Services:
When visiting in the Greeneville library (8-5 weekdays), faculty and staff are invited to drop by the Technical Services office where a coffee pot is maintained. We hope as many folks who have time will swing by for a cup.
Past Events:

* All figures are for fiscal years, e.g., July 2008-June 2009
** Figure for print books does not include bound periodicals (serial backfiles). Per usual library practice, this figure not separated out prior to acquisition of automated catalog system in 0405. No bound periodicals added 2004-2009; figure held remains constant at 54,103. If print books (48371) and bound periodicals (54,103) added, total is 102,474.
*** Addition of Serials Solutions journal management tool permits breakdown between Duplicated (D) and Unduplicated (U) numbers of titles held within the various databases.
**** Per usual library practice, microform subscriptions now largely replaced by electronic. Microform titles retained for years prior to beginning of electronic to provide lengthy backfiles.
Monthly Statistics:
In every number of the Reel & Page published through the school year, we will provide our most recent usage statistics, occasionally catching up for months unavailable (lag time for the latest is usually a month or so). Comparison figures between the current school year and that preceding are published in either the April issue or a special May issue. The 2008-09 comparison is in the May special edition, found at < http://library.tusculum.edu/archivesrnp/reelnpageMayextra2009.htm>.
