New titles list:

 We invite your attention to the Thomas J. Garland Library’s new title lists for the 4^th Quarter of 2008. A total of 296 new items were added to the shelves in Greeneville < http://library.tusculum.edu/newtitleOctDec2008Greeneville.htm and 111 in Knoxville http://library.tusculum.edu/newtitlesKnoxvilleoctdecember2008.htm. Your review of these 407 works is encouraged.

New collection selection:

  It is recommended that departments continue to compile their collection enhancement recommendation   lists for 2009-2010. Forms employed to start the process of turning those book and video suggestions into acquisitions will be sent to school directors at the end of January for distribution to departments and their faculties.

Collection evaluation:

 We have been fortunate over the past 6-7 years to be able to add many new titles to the circulating print collections of the Thomas J. Garland Library  (TJGL) The institutional goal of 65,000 print titles on the shelves in Greeneville is visible. Last year alone and for the first time in the school’s history, over 3,000 were added to the shelves.

The TJGL has an on-going program of collection evaluation with regards to print and electronic  titles both on the main campus and at the Knoxville branch. Faculty input is continuously sought  and encouraged. Titles deaccessioned during this ongoing program are made available to students, faculty and other patrons.

IL Scheduling:

The Information Literacy program in support of the Residential College is rapidly approaching in terms of volume and effectiveness that in place for GPS since 2003. Those seeking sessions with Mrs. Hipps and Mr. Tunstall, our Residential Information Team, are advised to get your requests in early. We have gone from a time when we had to beg folks to let us help to the luxury of having to carefully check schedules.

Database test:

The European Union has set up its own database, which it is now testing. Europeana is a full-text/full-media database of over 2 million digital items from libraries, museums, and archives in Europe, including the British Library and the Louvre:  http://www.europeana.eu/

This seems a particularly good visual site and is available to all free for as long as the Beta process continues.

 Reference books exhibited:

Decade-themed reference works created by Salem Press are now on display in the Information Commons of the Thomas J. Garland Library.  Among the titles are  The Fifties in America, The Sixties in America, The Seventies in America, and The Eighties in America.  Each multi-volume set gives a comprehensive overview and will prove useful for beginning research or for browsing.

Smith publishes 78^th volume:

The Timberclads in the Civil War: The Lexington, Conestoga and Tyler on the Western Waters  has been published by McFarland & Co., Inc. Converted to warships from commercial steamboats at the beginning of the conflict, the three named vessels formed the core of the North’s Western Flotilla, later the Mississippi Squadron. The book focuses on the activities of these wooden warriors while providing context for the greater war, including accounts of their famous commanders, their roles in both large and small battles, ship-to-ship combat, and support for the armies of Gen. U.S. Grant and Gen. William T. Sherman. A foreword was provided by the noted Civil War historian B. Franklin Cooling, author of the UT Press title Fort Donelson’s Legacy: War and Society in Kentucky and Tennessee, 1862-1863.
